It’s a welcome return to Burundi here at the roastery — and specifically to the Izuba Washing Station. This marks our third year purchasing coffee from Izuba, and it’s one we look forward to every season. Izuba, meaning “sun” in Kirundi, lies in Burundi’s Kayanza region, where rich soil and an ideal climate come together to produce truly exceptional coffees.

This particular lot is known as the Washed CWS Lot — CWS standing for Community Washing Station. Over 1,000 local producers deliver their cherries to Izuba, where some lots are separated and others combined before processing. The result is a coffee that beautifully reflects the land and community from which it comes.

We source this coffee through our long-term import partners, Raw Material, whose dedicated work on the ground continues to support and strengthen coffee-growing communities across Burundi. You can learn more about their impact and initiatives on their website https://www.rawmaterial.coffee/burundi

Our lot is made up primarily of the Red Bourbon variety, and this washed process highlights all the fruit character you’d expect. Izuba is wonderfully versatile — vibrant as a filter and balanced as an espresso — with notes of yellow stone fruit and sugary sweetness, all carried on a silky, milk-chocolate-like texture.

*Our coffee is freshly roasted each week and orders are dispatched on Tuesday and Thursday for orders received by 12pm the day before.
